Solving the mystery of Lighty’s fans

If you look closely at one of the pictures in the post on ‘What’s going on in the mechanical workshop?’ you’ll see that there’s a fan in the outer casing of the light. There’s also a fan within the inner region as well (see below), and you might well be wondering what these are doing there. These fans are needed to stop all the electronics inside Lighty (controlling both the screens and the lighting elements) from overheating – this is the same reason why laptops have fans in (and why you might notice your laptop getting very hot if the fan isn’t working as well as it should).

Essentially Lighty consists of a whole heap of electronics surrounded by a (well-insulating) plastic casing – this is a recipe for disaster if you don’t incorporate a way for the system to be cooled.
