Exciting update on lighthouse progress!
With the position of the screens agreed on it was finally time for Pawel to get out the vibrating saw and start cutting out windows in the lighthouse. These holes will allow the screens attached to the raspberry pi (shown below) to be positioned correctly. Mark and Pawel have also been hard at work designing…

Finalising screen positions
Things have been moving slowly on the lighthouse front recently, but that’s all about to change – Nic’s been down to the mechanical workshop to sketch out the position of various screens and knobs and vents, all ready for Mark and Pawel to start cutting!

Quest for lighthouse measurement
Before Lighty could be obtained, the researchers working on the project needed to know the precise dimensions of both the large and small lighthouses, to ensure that the screens and lighting elements would fit – cue an epic quest around Southampton to locate an existing lighthouse for measurement. This quest was carried out by DHBE’s…

Solving the mystery of Lighty’s fans
If you look closely at one of the pictures in the post on ‘What’s going on in the mechanical workshop?’ you’ll see that there’s a fan in the outer casing of the light. There’s also a fan within the inner region as well (see below), and you might well be wondering what these are doing…

What’s going on in the mechanical workshop?
The mechanical side of the lighthouse construction is being carried out by the wonderful Mark Long from the mechanical workshop. He’s been hard at work constructing the frames for both the large and small lights and attaching the grids of LEDs. After this, the interactive screens will need to be integrated, which will involve cutting…

How does Lighty’s light work?
So how will the light inside Lighty (and little Lighty) work? This task is being undertaken by Nic Green, as a break from his usual research examining microfluidics and various methods of particle manipulation. The light will be covered by a grid of LEDs, which flash different colours depending on whether visitors answer their questions…

Vision for our lighthouse
The DHBE lighthouse has been unofficially christened Lighty McLighthouse (or Lighty for short) and is going to be an interactive exhibit showcasing the main research pathways that exist within the group on the top layer, and a ‘healthy high-five’ on the bottom layer. The mini lighthouse, little Lighty, (again a somewhat unofficial name) will mirror…

Where is the lighthouse currently?
The lighthouse is currently residing in the electronics and computer science mechanical workshop, awaiting the completion of the electronic part of its design. It will then be transported to Westquay around the end of April to give Emily time to paint it.
